A climber told us the ChalkBlaster's button went mushy after a few months. You can't patch hardware over the air — so we swapped in a dust-resistant button and reworked every Batch 2 board by hand.

The button is the one part of the ChalkBlaster your thumb touches every single session. Power on, change mode, blast. If it stops feeling crisp, the whole tool starts feeling cheap — no matter how good the motor is. So when a climber told us ours become more and more less responsive, we couldn't let it slide.

The feedback that stung

It came in plain and honest: “the button becomes less responsive after a few months.” That's the kind of note that ruins your evening, because there's no quick fix waiting on the other side of it. This is hardware. You can't push an update overnight and wake up with the problem solved.

Why it happened

We traced it to the one thing our tool makes a lot of: dust. Fine chalk worked its way into the switch mechanism and dulled the click over time. The tactile snap faded, the press got mushy, and the honest answer was that the original button just wasn't good enough for where this tool lives — a chalk bag, a crag, a gym full of airborne powder.

If this were software

Ship a patch overnight, push it to every device, done by morning. Nobody has to send anything back. The fix reaches the customer while they sleep.

Because it's hardware

A better part has to be sourced, and every board already built has to be reopened and reworked by hand. The fix ships with the next batch, not tonight. There are no shortcuts.

What we changed

We sourced a premium, dust-resistant button — one built to keep its click even when it lives in a cloud of chalk. Then we did the unglamorous part: every single PCB in Batch 2 was reworked by hand to take the new switch, and each one was tested before it went anywhere. Slower and more expensive than we'd like, but it's the only honest way to fix a physical fault.

What this means for your ChalkBlaster

The button on the ChalkBlaster you'll hold is built for the mess it lives in. It should click the same in month six as it did on day one, chalk or no chalk. You'll press it a few thousand times without thinking about it, and not thinking about it is the whole point.

That one piece of feedback cost us time, money, and a fair bit of sleep. It also made the product genuinely better. That trade is one we'll take every time.
