Shipping ChalkBlaster to 30 countries is not the dream it looks like

Opening the customer map and seeing ChalkBlasters in 30 countries, from Honolulu to Australia, feels incredible. Setting it up was a nightmare: multiple carriers, shipping prices that vary 3x between regions, customs delays, lost packages, and returns that cost more than the sale. Kent spent months solving it so a climber in Japan gets the same brush, at a fair price, as one in Denmark.

TLDR

Opening the customer map and seeing ChalkBlasters in 30 countries, from Honolulu to Australia, feels incredible. Setting it up was a nightmare: multiple carriers, shipping prices that vary 3x between regions, customs delays, lost packages, and returns that cost more than the sale. Kent spent months solving it so a climber in Japan gets the same brush, at a fair price, as one in Denmark.

If you ordered a ChalkBlaster from outside Denmark, you're a dot on the map above. There are dots from Honolulu to Sydney, through most of Europe, Japan and Korea. Thirty countries. That map is the single most satisfying thing in our business, and getting it there was a nightmare.

Why "worldwide shipping" sounds better than it is

When you're two people building a brush in Denmark, "we ship worldwide" is the kind of line you put on a website because it sounds grown up. Then the first order from Australia comes in and you find out what it actually costs to send a ChalkBlaster there, how long it takes, and what happens when the customs form has the wrong code on it.

Shipping a physical product across the world is a set of problems that don't show up until you're in them. We hit all of them.

The four problems nobody warns you about

The first is carriers. No single carrier is good everywhere, so you end up managing several, each with its own rules, labels and tracking. The second is pricing. What it costs to get a ChalkBlaster to a climber varies about 3x between regions, and if you don't adjust your prices to match, the far-away orders quietly eat your margin. The third is customs. Delays, surprise duties on the customer's doorstep, and the occasional package that simply disappears. The fourth is returns. A return from the other side of the planet can cost more than the original sale.

3x
the difference in shipping cost between regions for the same ChalkBlaster. Ignore it and your margins vanish on the orders you're proudest of.

Who actually fixed it

This is where I hand it to my co-founder. I build the brush. Kent spent months on the unglamorous side of ChalkBlaster: carrier accounts, regional pricing, customs paperwork, lost-parcel claims, and a returns process that doesn't bankrupt us. None of it shows up in a product photo. All of it shows up on that map.

When I look at the heatmap now and see customers in Honolulu and Melbourne and Seoul, it hits different, because I know what each of those dots cost to make possible.

The dream vs the setup
What you picture

A map full of dots

Orders from 30 countries

"We ship worldwide"

What it takes

Several carriers, each with its own rules

Prices adjusted per region, up to 3x apart

Customs codes, duties, lost-parcel claims

Returns that can cost more than the sale

What this means for you

If you're in Tokyo or Texas, your ChalkBlaster arrives with the right paperwork, at a price that reflects what it costs to get it to you instead of a Danish number copied across the world. If something goes wrong in transit, there's a process for it, because we've already been through the version where there wasn't. Thirty countries of climbers brushing with the same tool, that's the part we wanted. The months of carrier spreadsheets are the part we paid.

From the workshop

Paul: "Yes, opening a customer map and seeing your product is being used in 30 countries feels incredible. It's actually a nightmare to set up. My co-founder Kent spent months solving these headaches."

Quick answers

Does SWEEP Climbing ship ChalkBlaster to my country?
We've shipped to 30 countries so far across North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. If your country isn't in the checkout list, email us and we'll tell you honestly whether we can get one to you.

Why is shipping more expensive to some regions?
Because it costs us up to 3x more to get the parcel there. We'd rather show you the real number than hide it in the product price for everyone.

What if my ChalkBlaster gets lost in transit?
Tell us. We've dealt with lost parcels before, we have a process for claims, and you won't be left holding the problem.

SWEEP Climbing builds tools for climbers who take friction seriously.
