The temptation with a first product is to perfect it in your head, then in software, and only build it once it's “right.” That path is slow and it's a trap. You can't feel ergonomics in a model, and you can't find out if a tool is intuitive until someone who isn't you picks it up. So we built a rough one, fast.
How the first prototype came together
The whole first version came from a scrappy loop that skips the months of theory.
Buy cheap, off-the-shelf parts. No custom anything. Just the closest components we could order and hold.
Arrange them by hand until it feels right. Move parts around until the ergonomics and the compactness actually sit well in a grip.
Photograph the layout. One clear shot of the arrangement, to scale.
Model it from the photo. Build the 3D model straight off that picture instead of guessing dimensions in the abstract.
3D print it. A real object you can hold, drop, and hate the parts of — in hours, not months.
Write basic firmware, fast. Just enough code — built quickly with an AI assistant — to make it actually do something.
Then we gave ten away
Once the rough version proved the idea, we built ten units of version two and handed them to climbers for free — in exchange for brutally honest feedback. Not friends being nice. Real users telling us what annoyed them.

What real hands told us
Ten climbers using a tool for real answered questions a spec sheet never could. Was it actually intuitive, or did people need it explained? Where were the real pain points, not the ones we'd imagined? And what broke, and how should we fix it? You only get honest answers to those from someone who didn't build the thing.
